Mike was the project manager for Canada’s first LEED V4 Platinum certified home built by Ecohome, the Edelweiss, which was called a “phenomenal achievement” by Thomas Mueller, President of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). He's since managed many more demonstration projects to prove that building sustainable and healthy homes doesn't have to cost more!
learn moreMike works as a housing mentor in the Indigenous Clean Energy (ICE) Network, helping First Nations communities find the best way to upgrade existing homes, and to adopt sustainable and resilient practices for new construction. "I find it inspiring and rewarding to work with young and upcoming community leaders who want to help their communities by building and renovating homes to high energy efficiency standards."
learn moreMike also works as a guest instructor in regional architectural design and construction schools to help upgrade curriculums and give workshops on sustainable design to both teachers and students. He's also done countless videos on the ins and outs of green building best practices as co-founder of The Ecohome Network - the world's largest green building network.
learn moreStudents
and staff found the presentation interesting, informative, and enlightening.
Our carpentry students now have a better understanding of eco home building
principles and will be able to incorporate these techniques into their
projects.
Judging
by the way our students responded to Mike’s presentation, he definitely got
them thinking seriously about building healthy, energy efficient and
environmentally-friendly houses. Presentations like Mike’s should be a required
component of every carpentry course.

Ecohome facilitated a
student-built modular LEED home that was donated to Habitat for Humanity. The project is called 'Our House' and helped NFSB position themselves as the green building school of Quebec.
Graduating students
participated in the building of a custom-designed, high performance
multi-family home with its sights on the highest LEED rating possible, that would
provide homes for two families in need.
The
Ecohome expertise has helped tremendously with our “Our House” project. The
cutting edge building techniques that Mike has passed along to our staff,
students and community is improving our knowledge base in order to keep up with
the latest in eco-trends construction.

I
brought my building envelope students to Mike’s workshop on passive heating and
cooling, and I could tell by the discussion that ensued how engaged the
students were.
Mike
reinforced many core principles I try to instill in my students, that simple is
better than complicated, and that we need to break away from what we *think* we
know about building performance and take advantage of lessons learned from the
successes and failures of what has been built in the past. It was great content
and I hope to do it again with future classes.
